EU / EEA roaming

Many contracts include “use like at home”, but fair-use policies, long-stay rules, and throttling after allowances may apply. Check rates for calls/SMS outside the zone and special cases like in-flight or maritime roaming—they are often excluded from “like at home”.

Outside the EU and special regions

Per-MB and per-minute charges can be high. Typical paths: a roaming add-on from your home operator, a local SIM after arrival, or a regional eSIM data plan. Before you buy, ensure your phone is unlocked if you plan to use another carrier’s SIM.

eSIM — what to verify

Offline backup

Download offline maps, booking PDFs, your hotel address, and emergency numbers before you lose signal. The Travel Planner keeps an itinerary in this browser (no account required)—consider a screenshot or export as a fallback.

Interactive outline: which option to consider?

Expand: decision steps (no brand names)
  1. Short EU trip? Start with your home operator’s app: if roaming allowances are enough, you may not need an extra SIM.
  2. Long stay or heavy data? Compare “like at home” + fair use with a local SIM or regional eSIM—estimate GB × days.
  3. Outside the EU? Check per-MB price; if it is high, consider a local SIM or travel eSIM after confirming the phone is unlocked.
  4. Laptop hotspot? Confirm tethering is allowed and that your data cap covers both devices.

Not financial advice—estimate and verify with your operator before purchase.
