Why travel insurance matters
It can reduce financial shock from emergencies abroad: medical bills, medical transport, sometimes trip cancellation for insured events, lost or delayed baggage, and assistance when you need help fast. Benefits and exclusions differ a lot—the wording is the source of truth.
What cover often includes
- Emergency medical and hospital costs — watch annual vs per-event limits.
- Personal accident — often a separate limit from illness cover.
- Personal liability — accidental harm to people or property.
- Baggage — delay, loss, or theft, usually with evidence rules.
- Cancellation / curtailment — only for defined “insured causes”.
- Assistance — helpline plus coordination.
Exclusions to scan carefully
Common exclusions or limits involve pre-existing conditions unless declared, alcohol or drugs, hazardous sports, travel against government advice, war zones, and intentional acts. If something matters to you (health condition, sport, destination), confirm in writing with the insurer.
Car hire is not automatically covered
Travel insurance rarely replaces collision / theft cover for a rental car. You may still need the rental company’s bundle or a separate motor policy. Check whether you have any third-party liability while driving abroad.
Documents to carry
Policy number, assistance phone, PDF of the wording, medication list, and emergency contacts speed things up when you are stressed or offline.
